Youth 10
Youth 10 – or Y10 as it is also known is the youth forum for young people living in the Borough…
Last December marked the tenth year of Youth 10’s mission to get the voice of Wokingham Borough’s young people heard. Originally, it was founded by a core of 28 young people to provide a support forum for the newly elected Member of Youth Parliament – since then its roles have changed and expanded, but it’s central ethos, that all young people deserve to be listened to, remains at the centre of all it does, whether working with more recent Members of Youth Parliament, talking with children’s services or managing the Youth Opportunities Fund, we always try and present the views of the young adults we represent.
Five years ago all across the country, youth forums such as Youth 10 were awarded central government money to grant and fund locally organised projects and schemes run for and by young people. Thus over the five years we have given away roughly £850,000 to nearly 100 deserving causes.
The youth opportunities and capital funds have taken away the red tape and made it simple and easy for all young people to turn their ideas into fruition. The process allows all young people access to the money and so truly takes the belief that every child matters. Projects are measured on their own merit, and are not straitjacketed by a rigorous set of pre-imposed criteria.
Last year we put on BackChat – a question time style event for young people and we put questions directly to decision makers and enabled young people to get their views heard – we’re planning to keep doing this in the future!
