The UK Wolf Conservation Trust exists to work towards ensuring that humans and wild wolves can live together harmoniously. It does this by educating people on wolves and their behaviour and habits and by supporting a variety of projects.

The Trust keeps seven wolves who live in a beautiful setting near Theale (just off junction 12 of the M4) and there is a variety of ways to get involved with their work, including visiting on open days and attending other events, visiting with schools or other groups, becoming a member or sponsoring a wolf.

I was lucky enough to join one of their walks — and we literally took a wolf out for a walk in the countryside, learned loads about these amazing animals, and then, the highlight, had the opportunity to approach the wolf and give it a good old rub on the tummy. Amazing.

The site is a place for the young people of Wokingham to share information and opinions on things they do, visit and buy. 

You do this by reviewing your experiences of being club members, getting involved in events and activities, the shops, cafes, restaurants and other places you visit, places you go on holiday, good causes you get involved with – everything! 

The more reviews you do, the more powerful and useful the site will be for all young people in Wokingham.

I was with an organised group. We were split into 8 teams and given a map with 25 markers to find, spread around the forest. We were given 2.5 hours to find as many as possible (with penalties for being late back) — and we were given a compass and shown how to use it. Easy, I thought. 2.5 hours is loads of time! Not so. There’s a lot more to orienteering than meets the eye. Strategy is everything. Finding the most efficient way to navigate the course to take in as many markers as possible was something we kind of discussed as an afterthought. We should have taken this more seriously!

2.5 hours later and we’d managed 19 markers, got very muddy, had alot of laughs, came third (hmmm!)and felt as though we could have done better! Orienteering is a great thing to do with a group of friends — even if you’ve not part of a larger group, you can set your own goals and targets. and Bracknell Forest is a good place to start. It is (almost) impossible to get totally lost — but you can really test yourself too. I still don’t know how to use a compass, though. This responsibility was given to another member of the team!

If you are interested in getting fit for the Summer and supporting a good cause at the same time, and just having a good day out with your mates, a good start might be to enter one of the Cancer Research 5K walk/runs taking place in the Spring and Summer.

I entered one of the London events last year. Speaking as someone who is somewhat unfit, I was worried. I didn’t need to be. On the day the atmosphere was great. Lots of people who enter have had some brush with cancer — either themselves, or have close friends or relatives who have suffered or are suffering. You can tell from the messages some of the entrants have pinned to them. They are moving, but uplifting at the same time. There was a real sense of solidarity and team spirit and fun.

We had an aerobics warm-up — ha ha! And then we set off. People ran, jogged, walked, crawled, and danced around the course — so if you’re not up for running the whole distance, believe me, you are not alone! I did it! And I got a medal and a goody bag too.

All in all I would recommend it. It’s great to feel as though you’re doing something worthwhile and perhaps I am just a little bit healthier too! Someone bring me a bar of chocolate.
